Cook, “Birds of the Boreal Barrens of Northeast Pennsylvania”<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The
Pocono plateau in northeastern Pennsylvania embodies the region’s boreal
heritage, harboring species tolerant to cooler temperatures reminiscent of its
glacial past. It is a vast landscape of glacial till barrens interspersed with
swamps, bogs, marshes and shallow ponds surrounded by red spruce, balsam fir
and eastern hemlock – woodlands more characteristic of Canada’s
northern climate. The bird life has a decidedly northern flavor, including many
species that are rare or absent elsewhere in the state. Bud Cook, Director of
The Nature Conservancy’s Northeastern Pennsylvania Office, will describe
the three major barrens sites in the region: Long Pond, Moosic Mountain, and
Arbutus Peak. They have many similarities, but each has its own distinctive
features, its own rarities. Each has public access, trails and great birding.
The Nature Conservancy and other organizations have been actively conserving
and managing habitat at each place.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

year, 2010, DVOC is thrilled to support the BIRD-SAFE GLASS PROJECT OF JOHN
HEINZ NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE AT TINICUM. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>
Through this grant DVOC will partner with John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge and
PA Audubon to stimulate public awareness of window strikes and create more
demand for window solutions. This will be accomplished through a demonstration
project at the Wildlife Center. The center receives 125,000 visitors per year,
providing excellent opportunities for education of the public. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>
All funds raised by the DVOC's 2010 World Series of Birding Team will be
awarded to John Heinz NWR. If necessary, the Refuge will match our funds up to
$3,000 providing sufficient seed money for the project. The project will
present visitors with a variety of effective solutions for window and building
glass. The displays will demonstrate the use of different materials for
different window applications. Additionally, graphics will demonstrate the dynamics
of window strikes, benefits and limitations of specific solutions and relative
costs. Visitors will be able to observe firsthand the look and feel of bird
safe solutions. Printed literature will also be available for visitors to take
home.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

The Nikon / DVOC’s Lagerhead Shrike team members are experts in the game
of “hit and run” birding. Nine times in the twenty six years of the
competition a DVOC team has won the grand prize - the Urner Stone Cup (highest
total species identified). The Lagerhead Shrikes do their part; now it is YOUR
turn. In order to support this worthy conservation project, we need

spring morning is planned at Riverwinds and later at the National Park Red Bank
Dredge Spoils, both adjacent to Philadelphia in Gloucester County. Jeff has
personally seen over 130 species at Riverwinds alone and the dredge spoils is
an excellent place for over wintering waterfowl and nesting marsh species.
Targets for the morning will be early migrants and nesting bitterns, rails,
Moorhen, Coot and Pied-billed Grebe. Meet at 7AM at Riverwinds.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

be listening for night birds along Dutch Neck Rd from 3:30 am until the birds stop
calling. We'll spend the hours before sunrise listening for calling Sora,
Virginia Rail, King Rail, Marsh Wren and Sedge Wren at the 1000 Acre Marsh and
Grier's Pond. Though not completely necessary, tall boots may be good to have
on hand. Please bring insect repellant, as Grier's Pond is infested with Deer
Ticks. Please make all efforts to contact Steve Kacir if you plan on attending.
The trip will run through sunrise. In case of unfavorable weather (including
high winds), this trip will be rescheduled.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

a Member - Franklin H. West</span></b><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:
"Arial","sans-serif"'><br>
It is with profound sorrow that the DVOC announces the passing of Dr. Franklin
H. West on March 11, 2010.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>He
joined the club in 1939 and was a Fellow and Life Member.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>At
the time of his passing he had been a club member for 71 years. Frank was on
the faculty at Haverford College and led the Sunday May bird walks there for
many years.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>From

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>"Franklin
Howard West, 88, of Gwynedd, a retired psychiatrist, died of heart failure
March 11 at home.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Dr.
West graduated from Lower Merion High School, earned a bachelor's degree from
Dartmouth College and a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and
interned at a military hospital on Long Island, N.Y., while serving in the
Navy.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>After
completing his training in psychiatry at the Institute of the Pennsylvania
Hospital in West Philadelphia, he remained on the staff there for more than 40
years, retiring in 1990. He was also affiliated with Hahnemann University
Hospital.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Dr.
West loved the arts, especially opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra, said his
wife, Margot.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>He
was most comfortable out in nature, stargazing, bird watching and bird calling
in Cape May, digging in his garden and giving tours of it, and visiting gardens
around the world, his wife said. He was coeditor of Hybrids and Hybridizers:
Rhododendron and Azaleas for Eastern North America.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>An
accomplished photographer, Dr. West documented his children's growing up with
slides and home movies. His black Labrador, Melody, was his constant companion,
his wife said.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

West is also survived by sons Thomas and David; daughters Catherine Greer,
Janet Wood, and Frances; three stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; and a

The Philadelphia Larus. We are looking for something in the order of 4-8 pages
to be published twice a year Content would include but not be limited to
information about club members, birding locations, conservation issues, a
letter from the President perhaps, etc. Anyone interested should contact Frank
