The Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) Weekly Digest
Upcoming Meeting
This Thursday May 21, 7:30 pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Program - Bert Filemyr, "The Apostrophes - Stories Behind Birds Named in
Honor of People"
Almost 100 North American bird names honor individuals. This talk will
describe how a person gets honored and stories behind those people so
honored. Particular emphasis will be placed on people with a Delaware Valley
area connection - Harris, Cassin, Bonaparte, Audubon, Wilson, etc.
There will be no Ornithological Study this meeting. Instead there will be a
World Series of Birding Report
Conservation Fund / World Series of Birding
The event was last week and if you have not heard, our team, the Nikon /
DVOC Lagerhead Shrikes, placed first overall with a total of 229 species for
the day. The club congratulates the team for this accomplishment and for
bringing honor to the club.
The World Series of Birding the primary way the club raises money for
conservation. Some members have donated a fixed amount and others made
pledges based on the number of species. If you made a pledge you will be
contacted (or already have been) by a member of the Conservation Committee.
Your interest in this matter is greatly appreciated. If you have not donated
yet and did not make a pledge, it is not too late. Your donation can be sent
to the DVOC Treasurer (Bert Filemyr, 1314 Lenore Road, Meadowbrook, PA
19046). All donations are fully tax deductable.
All money raised will go to this year's recipient, the "Willistown
Conservation Trust Bird Banding Station in Rushton Preserve (Pennsylvania)"
Big Day Reports
Doing a Big Day in May has been a tradition at DVOC. Get together with some
friends, pick a single 24-hour day, a birding location, and see how many
species of birds you can find. Afterwards, download the DVOC Big Day Report
Form, fill it out, and submit your results to Frank Windfelder. If you wish,
come to the June 4th DVOC meeting and tell us about it in person. This
includes teams participating in the New Jersey World Series of Birding"
Upcoming Field Trips
May 24 (Sunday) POCONO MOUNTAINS, PA., Delaware Water Gap, LAYTON and
ALPHA, NJ
New in 2009
Late May is an excellent time for breeding birds in the Poconos and northern
New Jersey. Among the more common species our targets will be breeding
Cerulean and possibly Golden-winged Warblers. We'll stop at the Gap and then
cross the river and continue birding in the Layton area of New Jersey and
then will head back to Pennsylvania via Alpha. Targets there will be
Grasshopper Sparrow and Bobolinks. Please contact Bill and Naomi Murphy for
more information at ndmurphy3 at hotmail.com if you are interested in
participating in this field trip.
(This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.)
Leaders: Bill and Naomi Murphy
June 6 (Saturday) WHARTON STATE FOREST FOR NIGHTJARS
This is a half day trip that meets in the early evening. We will focus on
hearing and seeing nightjars, especially Common Nighthawks performing their
Booming displays. We will also make some efforts to hear and see Barred Owl
and Whip-poor-will. Chucks-wills-widow has also been heard calling in the
area in past years, though not in recent years. The trip will meet at the
Carranza Memorial (between Atsion and Chatsworth) at 6:00PM. In case of foul
weather, the trip will be rescheduled.
(This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.)
