The Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) Weekly Digest
Upcoming Meeting
This Thursday February 19, 7:30 pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Jeffrey Hall, "Behaving Beautifully"
Photography can reveal more than the beauty of birds - a well-timed or
fortunate shot can also capture some of their actions and habits.
Concentrating on the birds of south Florida, this program will show us some
of the loveliest of birds and the oddest of behaviors.
Ornithological Study - "2008 Peregrine Falcon nesting season in
Pennsylvania." - Art McMorris
DVOC on Facebook
Many of our members use the social interaction website Facebook. It is "a
social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study
and live around them." At the suggestion of a member, DVOC now has a page on
Facebook. This is a place where you can post comments on meetings, field
trips or other club related activates. To use this you need to sign up
(free) at http://www.facebook.com. Once signed up you just need to search
for "DVOC". (If this does not make any sense to you, don't worry. It is an
Internet thing.)
NJ Pinelands Birding Trail - Request for sites
In September 2008 Lillian Armstrong presented a program to the club titled
"New Jersey Birding and Wildlife Trail Guides Project". Lillian recently
contacted the club to tell us that NJ Audubon is accepting nominations for
the Pinelands Birding and Wildlife Trails now! Club members are encouraged
to visit www.njwildlifetrails.org <http://www.njwildlifetrails.org/> for
further information. If you have a favorite birding site in the Pinelands
area now is the time to speak up!
Upcoming Field Trips
February 21 (Saturday) - INDIAN RIVER INLET (DELAWARE) AND POINTS NORTH
Join us as we search for wintering waterfowl, gulls, seabirds and other late
winter visitors. Besides birding Indian River Inlet and Rehoboth Bay, we
will stop at Silver Lake, Cape Henlopen State Park, Prime Hook and Bombay
Hook as we bird our way back north. Dress for the weather, bring lunch and
scopes. This is a joint field trip with Wyncote Audubon.
Meet at the parking lot on the north side of the Indian River Inlet at 9am.
Leader : Martin Selzer
February 21 (Saturday) - BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK PHOTOGRAPHY FIELD
TRIP, NJ
This field trip will focus on getting some good photographs of wintering
gulls and waterfowl at Barnegat Light. Almost no effort will be made to find
rarities. We'll plan to walk the jetty, find cooperative birds and
photograph them. Target birds include Red-throated Loons, Common Loon,
Long-tailed Ducks, Scoters, Purple Sandpipers, Eiders, Snow Buntings and
Ipswich Sparrow -- basically whatever we find. A King Eider showed up for
our much-delayed trip in 2008. Whether you're new to photography or a pro,
you're welcome on this trip. I will be shooting almost exclusively with a
Digital SLR and 300mm lens. Digiscopers and more traditional photographers
are both welcome, and we'll do our best to find some subjects for everyone.
If interested, contact Steve Kacir and let him know whether you'll be
digiscoping or just using a camera. Some information about your lens will
also help in planning our approach to this trip. In case of foul weather the
trip will be rescheduled.
Field Trip meeting place: Lighthouse Parking Lot. Meeting Time: 8:00am
Leader: Steve Kacir
