New DVOC Committee - Young Birders
President Paul Guris has created a new DVOC committee - The Young Birders
Committee. Club members are being sought for this committee. The purpose is
to establish and support club programs for young birders plus to coordinate
with other programs in the area. If you are interested in being part of this
effort, contact Paul Guris paul at paulagics.com

Opportunity for Club Members - Pinelands Birding Trail
The Pinelands Birding and Wildlife Trails in Atlantic, Gloucester, Camden
and Burlington Counties has over 75 nominations for trail sites. Needless
to say, New Jersey Audubon could use some qualified naturalists to conduct
site assessments, and collect a $100 stipend for each effort. If you are
interested or seek further information, contact Lillian Armstrong, Director
of Birding and Wildlife Trails New Jersey Audubon Society -

AOU Convention - A message from Bob Curry - Chair, Committee on Local
Arrangements, AOU2009
The program for the AOU conference includes presentations by many famous and
important ornithologists (including club member Art McMorris), as well as
more than 200 students who represent the "next generation" of avian
scientists and conservationists. We welcome members of DVOC to attend all or
part of the conference. This can happen in two ways.
(1) Members may register for individual days of the conference (for $100),
whereby they can attend any of the scientific sessions taking place that
day. Details about the full program and registration are available on the
conference web site, at www.birdmeetings.org/aou2009/
(2) Members may sign on as official conference Volunteers, in exchange for
free admission to some sessions. Individuals interested in that option
should contact the Chair of the Volunteer committee, Jen Mortensen
(mortejen at gmail.com).
A Date to Mark - Thursday November 19th
Annual Banquet
Details will be available soon!
Cassinia Volume 71 - Distribution
The latest volume of Cassinia (the DVOC's journal) is being distributed.
Those people at the July 2nd meeting picked theirs up and hopefully picked
up copies for other members. Copies will be available at summer meetings and
at the September meetings. At that time, remaining copies will be mailed.
The cost of mailing is significant so make every effort to pick up your copy
or have someone do it for you
Upcoming Field Trips
Aug 30 (Sunday) - GREEN LANE RESERVOIR AND UPPER MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA
Join Steve Kacir for shorebirds, waders and perhaps a few surprises at Green
Lane Reservoir. This is one of the best locations in eastern PA for
shorebirds. The trip will be a half day trip, focusing on shorebirds on any
mudflats at Green Lane as well as some other spots in Upper Montgomery
County that are known to attract early migrants and birds undergoing their
post-breeding dispersal.
This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.
Meeting Time: 7:00am
Meeting Place: Church Rd Parking Lot at Green Lane Reservoir.
Trip Leader: Steve Kacir
Directions: From the Northeast Extension of I-476, take Exit 44 for PA 663
towards Quakertown/Pottstown. Take PA 663 South towards Pottstown. PA 663
starts as John Fries Hwy and becomes Pottstown Ave. Turn right onto
Schoolhouse Rd. Turn left onto Church Rd. Follow Church Rd for less than a
mile. Immediately before the intersection of Church Rd and Hock Rd, turn
left into the parking area that borders Green Lane Reservoir. If you get to
Kutztown Rd, you have gone too far.
September 6 (Sunday) - PALMYRA COVE NATURE PARK, NJ
We will bird for passerines, then go to the cove for waterbirds. It's a good
time for early fall migrants, such as Golden-winged & Mourning Warblers,
Yellow-bellied, Least and Olive-sided Flycatchers. These are rare of course,
but we're bound to find something good. Meet in the parking lot at 6:45 AM
This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.
MAXIMUM: 10 participants - email Frank to register
Leader: Frank Windfelder (267-251-1141)
AOU Convention - A message from Chris Walters
There is a need for volunteers to help the AOUers on the field trips. We
especially need additional helpers for the brief morning walks at Tinicum on
Aug 13, 14, and 15 (Thurs thru Sat).
Anyone interested should contact Chris Walters or Bert Filemyr. Thanks.
