An Important Historical Anniversary

Today Sunday September 21, 2008 marks the 200th anniversary of the
publication of Alexander Wilson's landmark American Ornithology. In
commemoration of this event the DVOC is pleased to make available, prior to
being published in Cassinia, club member Jeff Holt's article on Alexander
Wilson (The Father of American Ornithology) titled "Poet to Ornithologist".

December 18th Meeting - Photo Contest

Format: Digital only

Well, summer is over and many of you have taken some great trips and shot
some wonderful photos. Will you win the DVOC slide contest? Prizes will be
awarded in four categories: Birds, Natural History (non-avian fauna),
Scenery, and Birders (one year, former President Bob Sehl was shown riding a
camel).

Entries must be submitted in advance to Frank Windfelder. You can submit a
MAXIMUM of 3 shots in each category, except birds, where you can submit 5
(it's a bird club!).

Put these on a CD and either email them, snail mail them, or hand them to
Frank Windfelder at a DVOC meeting

 

Upcoming Field Trip  

October 4 (Saturday) - Sharp-tailed Sparrows at Tuckerton Marshes, NJ

We should get great looks at salt marsh sharp-tail's as well as being able
to compare all races of nelson's. A walk along 7 Bridges Road will add
additional species. We have gotten clay-colored sparrow in several years.
Bring high boots or wellies. Pack a lunch if you will follow us to
Brigantine afterwards. Meet at the end of 7 Bridges Road at 7:30 sharp!

Trinidad and Tobago Travel Opportunity

Atlantic Audubon Society, is taking a trip to Trinidad-Tobago in Jan. 09.
They had a couple cancellations so they are interested in finding people to
fill the spots.  
Here are the details:
Trinidad & Tobago with Caligo Ventures
Jan 25 - Feb 4, 2009
6 days at Asa Wright Nature Center in the Northern range and 3 days at
Cuffie River Lodge, Tobago including a boat trip to Little Tobago Is.
Visits to Caroni Marsh, Nariva Swamp and Dunston cave to see the nocturnal
Oilbird.  Return to US and one night in Miami to make connection to
Philadelphia.
Cost $3300, including airfare from Phila.  Deposit of $250 due ASAP, final
payment by Nov 20th.
