[DVOC] Report on the Two DVOC Summer Interns

I wanted to report to all that DVOC Council recently decided to use our
World Series of Birding contributions to support not one, but two,
summer interns this year at the Bird Dept of the Academy of Natural
Sciences. It is costing DVOC $1000 for each intern. It is great that we
were able to raise enough WSB funds to do that---let me thank everyone
who pledged and contributed to this effort (in fact we raised enough to
support an intern each of the following two summers as well). If you had
met the interns, as I did yesterday, you would agree that our money is
going for a great purpose.

And yes, our interns are both present and accounted for, working
diligently away under Nate Rice's close eye in the Academy Bird Dept.
When Nate introduced them to me yesterday, they were busy working with
volunteer (and Club member) Dana Cohen preparing a Ruddy Duck specimen
(what a bloody mess!). They both expressed delight at their internships
and many thanks to the Club for helping make these possible.

I left them with a color copy of our last issue of Larus-on-Line, a copy
of our Checklist, and an invitation to come to our two summer field
trips (Bombay Hook in July and Brigintine in August) and our August 2
informal meeting at Palmyra (to report on their summer intern
experiences). (I may have to ask one or two of you to help provide them
with transportaion to these events). But I was amused when--even before
I raised the subject--our younger intern, Hannah, asked me about our
summer field trips (I especially enjoyed her name for them:
"expeditions"!).

The interns are Noor, a young man who will be a freshman at Harvard in
the fall, and the aforementioned Hannah (she will be a senior at
Harriton H.S. in the fall).

If anyone has any questions about this internship program, feel free to
ask me or Nate on-line or ask me at next Thursday's informal Club
meeting over at Palmyra Cove Nature Center (NJ), where I see that Adrian
Binns is scheduled to educate us (what?) on two separate subjects.
