Lakehurst Naval Air Station Trip Report
June 22, 2011
Our annual trip to the Lakehurst Naval Air Station was again very sucessful.
The day was overcast, which caused the birds to remain active for most of the
morning. The Upland Sandpipers gave a great show, with close-up looks as well
as their unique wolf whistle. We believe we saw at least five or six different
adults. In addition, we had great views of Grasshopper Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks,
Horned Larks, and Blue Grosbeaks. And at a distance, we saw Common Nighthawks
and Red-tailed Hawks.
The newly formed combined base of McGuire-Fort Dix-Lakehurst
has more stringent requirements for getting on the base. We were required to
submit our list of attendees two weeks in advance. Five members attended the
trip, while several others signed up after the deadline.
